🏅 Getting Started
What is Train BJJ?

Train BJJ is a training companion app designed specifically for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. It helps you track every session, monitor your progress over time, set training goals, organize your technique library, and connect with training partners — all in one place. Think of it as a digital training journal that travels with you everywhere.

How do I log my first training session?
  1. Open Train BJJ and tap the + button at the bottom of the home screen
  2. Select "Log Session" from the radial menu
  3. Choose your session type (BJJ Class, Open Mat, Private Lesson, etc.)
  4. Set the date, start time, and end time
  5. Toggle Gi or No-Gi
  6. Add details like rounds rolled, submissions, and techniques practiced
  7. Write notes about what you learned, what worked, and what didn't
  8. Tap "Save" to record your session
What session types can I log?

Train BJJ supports five session types, each designed for different training scenarios:

  • BJJ Class — Regular scheduled classes at your academy. Tracks coaching notes and what you learned.
  • Open Mat — Free rolling/drilling sessions. Tracks rounds, submissions, taps, sweeps, and more.
  • Class + Open Mat — When class is followed by open mat. Captures both sets of notes and rolling stats.
  • Private Lesson — One-on-one instruction with your coach. Focuses on coaching notes.
  • Competition — Tournaments and competitive matches. Tracks match results and outcomes.
Can I edit or delete a session after saving it?

Yes! Tap any session from your calendar or history to open it. From the session detail view, tap the Edit button (pencil icon) in the top-right corner to modify any details. To delete a session, use the delete option from the same menu. If the session was shared to the social feed, you'll also have the option to remove just the social post while keeping the session.

Live Session Tracking
What is Live Session tracking?

Live Session lets you track your training in real time. Start a session when you step on the mat and it runs a live timer, letting you count rounds, submissions, and taps as they happen. It works with the Dynamic Island and Lock Screen so you can track stats without even opening the app.

How do I start a Live Session?
  1. Tap the + button on the home screen
  2. Select "Live Session" from the radial menu
  3. Choose Gi or No-Gi
  4. Tap "Start" to begin the live timer
  5. Use the on-screen counters (or Lock Screen controls) to track rounds rolled, submissions, and taps in real time
  6. When you're done, tap "End Session" and review/save your data
Can I control the session from my Lock Screen?

Yes! When a Live Session is active, Train BJJ shows interactive controls on your iPhone's Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. You get six tap targets — increment and decrement buttons for Rounds Rolled, Submissions, and Taps — so you can update your stats without unlocking your phone. Changes sync instantly back to the app.

Does it include a round timer?

Yes! The Live Session includes a configurable round timer with audio alerts. You can set round length and rest time, and it plays a sound when each round ends — even if your phone is on silent. The timer is designed to work alongside your music without interrupting playback.

🎯 Focus Points (Goals)
What are Focus Points?

Focus Points are your personal training goals. They help you stay intentional about your BJJ journey by tracking specific areas you want to improve — for example, "Improve guard retention," "Master the arm triangle," or "Work on takedown defense." Each Focus Point tracks how many sessions you've worked on it and your self-assessed progress.

How do I create a Focus Point?
  1. Tap the + button on the home screen
  2. Select "Focus Point" from the radial menu
  3. Give your goal a descriptive name
  4. Optionally add a description with more details about what you're working on
  5. Associate specific techniques you want to drill
  6. Tap "Save"
How do Focus Points connect to my sessions?

When you log or edit a session, you can select which Focus Points you worked on during that session. This creates a powerful link — you can tap any Focus Point to see every session where you trained that goal, including all your notes. It's the fastest way to track whether you're actually making progress on specific areas of your game.

Can I archive completed Focus Points?

Yes! When you've achieved a goal, you can archive it. Archived Focus Points are saved in a separate view so you can always look back at your progress without cluttering your active goals list. You can also reactivate archived Focus Points at any time if you want to revisit them.

How many Focus Points can I have?
  • Free: 1 active Focus Point
  • Premium: Up to 5 active Focus Points

Archived Focus Points don't count toward your limit, so you can complete goals and create new ones as you progress.

AI Features
What is the AI Training Coach?

The AI Training Coach is a chat-based assistant that knows your complete training history. It can analyze your game, identify patterns, suggest techniques to work on, and give personalized advice based on your actual training data. Tap the floating AI button on any tab to start a conversation.

  • Free: 20 messages per month
  • Premium: 200 messages per month
What are Post-Session AI Insights?

After logging a session, you can request an AI analysis of that specific training. The AI reviews your notes, techniques used, outcomes, and stats to provide personalized feedback — including what went well, areas to improve, technique suggestions, and retention tips. Open any session and tap "Get AI Insight" to try it.

  • Free: 5 insights per month
  • Premium: Unlimited insights
What is the Notebook Scanner?

The Notebook Scanner lets you photograph a handwritten training notebook page and automatically converts it into a digital session. It uses on-device text recognition (OCR) combined with AI parsing to extract the date, session type, techniques, notes, and more. Simply tap the + button and select "Scan" from the radial menu.

  1. Take a photo of your notebook page (or choose from your photo library)
  2. The app extracts text using on-device OCR
  3. AI parses the text into structured session data
  4. Review and edit the pre-filled session form
  5. Save — your handwritten notes are now a searchable digital record
  • Free: 5 scans per month
  • Premium: 50 scans per month
Can the AI Coach create techniques or log sessions for me?

Yes! The AI Coach can suggest actionable buttons in its responses. These let you create a new technique, view an existing technique, set a focus point, or even log a session — all with a single tap. The AI pre-fills the details based on your conversation, so you just review and save.

Is my training data sent to external servers for AI?

When you use AI features, a summary of your recent training data (stats, techniques, and notes) is sent to our secure cloud infrastructure for processing. This data is used solely to generate your personalized coaching response and is never stored, shared, or used for training AI models. The text recognition (OCR) for the Notebook Scanner runs entirely on your device.

📚 Techniques
How does the technique library work?

Train BJJ includes a library of 150+ BJJ techniques organized by category (Submissions, Sweeps, Guard Passes, Takedowns, Escapes, and more). You can browse, search, and filter by category. When editing a session, tap "Tag Techniques" to link techniques you worked on during that session.

How do I tag techniques with Position and Outcome?

When you tag a technique to a session, you can add rich metadata:

  • Position: Where you applied it — Top, Bottom, or Standing
  • Outcome: What happened — Submission, Sweep, Takedown, Escape, Guard Pass, or their defensive counterparts (Tapped, Swept, Taken Down, Guard Passed)
  • Count: How many times it occurred

This data powers your analytics, showing you your deadliest techniques, problem areas, and position performance over time.

Can I add my own custom techniques?

Absolutely! If a technique isn't in the built-in library, you can create your own:

  1. Go to the Techniques tab
  2. Tap the + button
  3. Enter the technique name, category, and optional description
  4. Your custom technique is saved and available for tagging in all future sessions
  • Free: 3 custom techniques
  • Premium: Unlimited custom techniques
What's the benefit of linking techniques to sessions?

This is one of Train BJJ's most powerful features. When you tap on any technique in your library, you'll instantly see every session where you practiced it, along with all your notes, outcomes, and position data. No more flipping through pages to find when you last drilled that armbar or which sessions had you working from half guard. It also feeds your analytics — showing submission rates, position effectiveness, and technique trends over time.

👥 Social & Community
What is the difference between Following and Training Partners?

Train BJJ has three levels of social connection:

  • Following (one-way): You follow someone to see their public posts in your feed. They don't have to follow you back.
  • Mutual Follows (two-way): When you follow each other, you can see each other's "Training Partners Only" posts — content shared with your trusted circle but not the general public.
  • Training Partners (explicit): A formal relationship that builds on mutual follows. Send a Training Partner request, and once accepted, you unlock side-by-side metric comparisons with Stack Up.
How does "My Gym" discoverability work?

You can associate your profile with a specific gym location. The My Gym feed tab shows public posts from everyone who trains at your location, even if you don't follow them. This makes it easy to discover and connect with training partners at your academy. You can toggle discoverability on or off in your profile settings.

Who can see my training sessions?

Your training journal is private by default. When you share a session to the social feed, you choose its visibility:

  • Public: Visible to anyone following you and users at your gym
  • Training Partners Only: Visible only to people who mutually follow you

You can also make your entire profile private (like Instagram), which requires follow requests and hides your posts from non-followers.

How do privacy settings work?

Train BJJ offers Instagram-style privacy controls:

  • Public profile: Discoverable in search and My Gym feed, instant follows, posts visible to all followers
  • Private profile: Not discoverable, follow requests required, posts only visible to approved followers

Switching to private retroactively updates all your past posts. You can also control individual settings like whether your training stats and belt rank are visible on your profile.

Can I block or mute users?
  • Block: Completely hides both users from each other — removes follows, hides from search, and prevents all interaction
  • Mute: Hides their posts from your feed without unfollowing. They won't know they've been muted.
What are the social feed tabs?
  • All: Posts from everyone you follow
  • Training Partners: Posts only from people who mutually follow you
  • My Gym: Posts from discoverable users at your gym location
💪 Training Partners & Stack Up
What are Training Partners?

Training Partners are a formal relationship within the app. Unlike simple follows, becoming Training Partners requires a mutual follow first, then an explicit request that the other person accepts. Training Partners unlock Stack Up — the side-by-side metric comparison feature. You can have up to 25 Training Partners.

How do I add a Training Partner?
  1. Make sure you and the other user are following each other (mutual follow)
  2. Visit their profile and tap "Add Training Partner"
  3. They'll receive a notification with your request
  4. Once they accept, you're officially Training Partners

Training Partner requests expire after 30 days if not accepted.

What is Stack Up?

Stack Up is a premium feature that lets you compare your training metrics side-by-side with a Training Partner. It compares 20 metrics across 5 categories and shows percentile-based rankings (Elite, Above Average, Average, Below Average, Needs Work). You can filter by time period — Week, Month, Year, or All Time.

What metrics does Stack Up compare?

Stack Up compares 20 metrics across 5 categories:

  • Volume: Mat Hours, Sessions, Rounds, Competitions
  • Consistency: Day Streak, Week Streak, Training Frequency
  • Offense: Submissions, Sweeps, Takedowns, Escapes, Guard Passes
  • Defense: Taps, Got Swept, Got Taken Down, Guard Passed
  • Ratios: Sub:Tap, Sweep, Takedown, Guard Pass, Net Score
Apple Watch & HealthKit
What is HealthKit integration?

HealthKit integration connects Train BJJ with Apple Health and your Apple Watch. When you record a martial arts workout on your watch, the app can automatically detect it and prompt you to log a full session with your notes, techniques, and details.

How do I enable HealthKit?
  1. Open Train BJJ and go to Profile > Side Menu > Health Settings
  2. Toggle on "Apple Health"
  3. Grant the requested health permissions when the system dialog appears
  4. Your Apple Watch workouts will now be detected automatically
What data does the app read from HealthKit?

Train BJJ only reads martial arts and combat sports workout data, including:

  • Workout duration
  • Calories burned
  • Average heart rate (if available)
  • Workout date and time

We never read or access any other health data (sleep, nutrition, medications, etc.).

How does automatic workout detection work?

Train BJJ uses a two-tier detection system. When you finish a martial arts workout on your Apple Watch, the app receives a notification and shows a prompt asking if you want to log a session with that workout's data. If the first detection is missed, a background check runs periodically as a fallback. The app automatically imports the duration, calories, and heart rate into your session.

Can I import historical workouts?
  • Free: Import workouts from the last 30 days
  • Premium: Import your full workout history (3, 6, or 12 months)

Go to Profile > Side Menu > Import Data > HealthKit Import to bulk import past workouts.

I dismissed a workout notification. Can I still import it?

Yes! Dismissed workouts aren't lost. Go to Profile > Side Menu > Health Settings and you'll find an option to view and import any workouts you previously dismissed.

🎥 Video Attachments
Can I add videos to my sessions?

Yes! You can record new videos or attach existing ones from your photo library to any session. This is great for recording techniques shown in class, sparring rounds, or competition matches so you can review them later.

How many videos can I attach?
  • Free: 3 videos per session
  • Premium: Unlimited videos per session
Where are my videos stored?

Videos are stored securely on your device and backed up to iCloud if you have iCloud sync enabled (Premium). They are only accessible within the Train BJJ app and are not shared with anyone.

📤 Data Import & Export
Can I import data from another app or physical notebook?

Yes! Premium users have two import options:

  • CSV Import: Import sessions from a spreadsheet or another training app. Go to Profile > Side Menu > Import Data > CSV Import, select your file, map the columns, and preview before importing.
  • Notebook Scanner: Take a photo of your handwritten training notebook and the AI will automatically extract and create a session from it.
Can I export my data?

Yes! Premium users can export all their training data. Go to Profile > Side Menu > Export Data and choose your format:

  • CSV: Spreadsheet format, great for analysis in Excel or Google Sheets
  • JSON: Structured data format for developers or advanced users
  • PDF: Formatted report of your training history
What format should my CSV be for importing?

Your CSV should include these columns (at minimum):

  • Date: MM/DD/YYYY, M/D/YY, or YYYY-MM-DD
  • Start Time: h:mm a or HH:mm
  • End Time: h:mm a or HH:mm
  • Session Type: class, private, coaching, open mat, or competition
  • Gi Type: gi, no-gi, yes, or no

Optional columns: Rounds, Submissions, Tapped, Location, Notes, Coaching Notes, What Worked, What Didn't Work. The import wizard will guide you through mapping your columns.

You'll keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period.

  2. Open Train BJJ
  3. Go to Profile > Side Menu > Subscription
  4. Tap "Restore Purchases"

Your Premium status should be restored within a few seconds.

iCloud Sync (Premium)
How does iCloud sync work?

Premium users can enable iCloud sync to keep their data backed up and synchronized across all their Apple devices. Your sessions, techniques, focus points, reminders, and even video attachments are stored in your private iCloud database. If you delete the app or switch devices, your data is safe and will reappear when you sign in with the same Apple ID.

How do I enable iCloud sync?
  1. Make sure you have an active Premium subscription
  2. Go to Profile > Side Menu > Data Management
  3. Toggle on "iCloud Sync"
  4. Your data will begin syncing immediately

Make sure you're signed in to iCloud on all devices where you want data to appear.

What if I have conflicting data on different devices?

Train BJJ uses a last-write-wins conflict resolution strategy. If the same session is edited on two devices simultaneously, the most recent change takes priority. In practice, conflicts are rare since changes sync within seconds when both devices are online.

📈 Statistics & Progress
What statistics does the app track?

Train BJJ tracks a comprehensive set of analytics:

  • Total sessions and mat hours
  • Sessions per week, month, and year
  • Training streaks (consecutive weeks)
  • Net score (offensive vs. defensive performance)
  • Submission, sweep, takedown, escape, and guard pass counts
  • Deadliest techniques (your highest-frequency submissions)
  • Problem areas (techniques you get caught with most)
  • Position performance (top, bottom, standing efficiency)
  • Gi vs. No-Gi splits
  • Multi-month trends
  • Calories burned and heart rate data (with HealthKit)
How is my training streak calculated?

Your streak counts consecutive weeks where you logged at least one training session. This encourages consistent training without punishing you for missing a single day. If you train at least once every week, your streak keeps growing. Miss a full week, and it resets.

Where can I see my calendar view?

The Home tab shows a monthly calendar with dots indicating training days. Tap any date to see all sessions logged that day. You can swipe between months to review your entire training history at a glance.

🔔 Notifications & Achievements
What kind of notifications does Train BJJ send?

Train BJJ sends two types of notifications:

  • In-app notifications: Session milestones (10th, 50th, 100th session), streak achievements, and personal records
  • Push notifications (social): New followers, reactions on your posts, comments, training partner requests, and training partner activity

Milestones are also automatically posted to the social feed so your training partners can celebrate with you.

Can I turn off notifications?

Yes! Go to Profile > Side Menu > Notification Settings to toggle individual categories on or off. You can separately control notifications for new followers, reactions, comments, streak milestones, and training partner activity.

🔒 Privacy & Security
What data does Train BJJ collect?

Train BJJ is designed with privacy first:

  • Training data: Stored locally on your device. Premium users can optionally enable iCloud sync (your private iCloud, not our servers).
  • Social data: If you use social features (feed, follows, comments), your profile info and shared activities are stored on Firebase for real-time delivery.
  • AI features: When you use AI features, a training summary is sent for processing but is never stored or used for AI training.
  • No tracking: We don't use analytics trackers or advertising SDKs.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Who can see my training data?

Only you can see your detailed training journal (sessions, notes, techniques). Social features are opt-in — you choose what to share and with whom. Your profile privacy settings control whether you're discoverable and whether others need approval to follow you.

Can I delete all my data?

Yes. Go to Profile > Side Menu > Data Management > Clear Data to permanently delete all your local training data. If you have a social account, you can delete your account from the same menu, which removes all your Firebase data (profile, activities, follows, reactions, and comments). This action cannot be undone.

📱 Home Screen Widgets
What widgets are available?

Train BJJ includes three home screen widgets:

  • Training Summary (Medium): Weekly dashboard showing mat hours, days trained, submissions, taps, sweeps, and techniques
  • Streak Widget (Small + Lock Screen): Your current training streak with risk-based color indicators (green = safe, yellow = at risk, red = streak in danger)
  • Reminders Widget (Small + Medium): Your top 5 active reminders with tap-to-open navigation
How do I add a widget?
  1. Long-press on your iPhone home screen until apps jiggle
  2. Tap the + button in the top-left corner
  3. Search for "Train BJJ"
  4. Choose your preferred widget size and tap Add Widget

Widgets update automatically when you log sessions, create reminders, or open the app.
